THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS BAD LIGHT

Does this sound ridiculous?

As a wildlife photographer, I’m sure that you have experienced countless situations where the light really was bad; where harsh highlights or deep shadows ruined your photographs for instance.

But it didn’t have to.

As artists, we are limited only by the depths of our own creativity.

In my book Mastering Light: The essence of Wildlife Photography, I take a deep dive into all the many forms of natural light we encounter in the field and how to use it to our benefit. From harsh midday light to contrasty dappled lighting like you find in forests, every type of light offers us something to work with, something creative to use, if we only we know how to approach it.

I wrote this book back in 2014. Now, nearly 10 years old, the ways in which we think about and approach light have changed with the technology of our cameras. From the dynamic range of modern cameras to the way in which even autofocus systems in our mirrorless cameras are now hinged upon the ambient light, much has changed since I first wrote this book and it’s time for me to write an all new and updated version of this.

In preparation for my new book, I am giving away the original Mastering Light for free.
